A new Street Fighter live-action short film, Street Fighter Legacy, will be released online tomorrow May 6th 2010. The film was written and co-directed by Joey Ansah (the black assassin in Bourne Supremacy that chased Julia Stiles down several alleys before Matt Damon jumped through a window from another building and killed in a bathroom) and has Capcom’s blessing.
Take a look at the Street Fighter Legacy teasers below. Ansah loves the Street Fighter games and simply wanted to make a good, faithful film for fans. On his site he states, “I’ve gone to every length to be as faithful as possible down to the smallest details of the costume, the choreography, the narrative, the original music themes and of course the special moves!”
Street Fighter Legacy is a Streetlight Films production directed by Owen Trevor (Top Gear and the acclaimed but unknown Wobbegong). Ansah wanted to make a darker toned more adult themed film. If you take a look at the imdb keywords describing producer Jacqueline Quella’s career (attempted-rape, female-nudity, blood, murder) you see a history that echoes Ansah’s aims.
The teasers don’t showcase a lot of footage of the low-budget short. Fans are very picky about special effects. What will the low-budget hadouken look like? How will the writing be for a first time screenwriter?
Ansah’s bio on his site repeatedly discusses his obsession with martial arts. He trained in Tae Kwon Do for 4 years, trained in Ninjitsu with military personnel, dedicated himself to acrobatics and tumbling, did a three year degree in human biology at Oxford Brookes University, and took up Capoeira (Brazilian martial art).
A Tae Kwon Do-acrobatic-specialist-biology-grad-Capoeira-trained-Capcom-blessed-Ninja who beat the shit out Jason Bourne and only wants to fix something thousands of fans have complained about years has my blessing as well.
Look for the film online tomorrow and check Joey Ansah.com for updates.
