The selection for Netflix Canada sucks. I know. Here is a brief review of a movie that is worth your while.
Independent films are arguably by definition movies not everyone would enjoy. If you had an idea that was big enough for a wide release then that’s where it belongs.
But if you feel compelled to watch an independent film, The Rules of Attraction is much more likely to keep your attention because it’s about sex. Specifically, it’s about a bizarre sex triangle between Sean (James Van Der Beek), Lauren (Shannyn Sossamon), and Paul (Ian Somerhalder).
Sean is a drug dealer and “an emotional vampire” who sleeps around because he hungers for other peoples emotions. Lauren is infatuated with a man who has no idea who she is. And Paul is a bi-sexual flirt, who can’t catch a break in picking up a man.
The movie is written and directed by Roger Avary, the same guy who co-wrote Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino. If you can’t appreciate that style of writing you should probably stay away from this film because it is similar.
The Rules of Attraction isn’t a happy movie but if you’re browsing the “Independent” category in Netflix you’re likely on the hunt for something bleak, different, and intriguing. And something that has some sex.
Well you found it.
